Fear of the Unknown

The unknown part is that I’ll be throwing in just about exactly a day-and-a-half, and I’ve only been able to practice 3 times in the last 3 weeks. Between the rain (yes it’s still raining – so far, every day this week), and having a prolonged flu/crud/sinus infection, throwing has taken a little vacation.
It’s kind of a bummer too because I’m running out of meets this year and I’ve dropped to 13th in the rankings. I just looked, and there is a real log-jam just ahead of me. There are 7 throwers between my 138’ 0.5” and 147’ 5”. Unfortunately, 6 of them are between 145’ 8” and 147’ 5”. So that’s 6 guys within less than 2 feet of each other, and all of them over 7 feet beyond my PR.
That’s a little discouraging, considering my goal of winding up in the top 10 at the end of the year. Oh well, I knew at the beginning of the season that I would need to be pushing 150’ in order to have a good shot at winding up in the top10. We'll see if I can come up with a minor miracle.

We'll See...

It rained all morning but I finally got to throw later on in the day. I’m still not feeling 100% but I took it kind of easy. Maybe tomorrow I can push a little harder.
It looks like the changes I’ve made in my technique could very possibly give me a PR on Saturday. Maybe I can even get 140' for the first time. But…I’m really fouling out the front of the circle now. That’s something I’ve never done before so I really need to fix that pronto!

Two Steps Back...

One step forward.
We had a break in the rain today so I was able to go out and throw a little this morning. This was my first exercise of any kind in a week.
The wind was perfect, but I'm still a little weak from being sick (and not training) and my sinus infection made me a little dizzy when doing spins. So this was not a day for any PRs.
It really felt good to have the discus in my hand again though. I was able to recover a little of the timing and rythm that I had lost over the last week, but the lack of strength was very noticeable. I've got a meet in 2 weeks, so who knows what I should expect from that. There's not a lot you can do with only 12 days to train.

Weather Report

From the front page of today’s local paper:
Prior to today, it has rained on 28 of the last 35 days.
It has rained on 23 of the last 24 days, including one stretch of 15 consecutive days.
But wait, there’s more…
- My discus area is a mud hole, and I can’t seem to get in any practice.
- I’ve been down with a bad cold for the last week and haven’t even been able to go the gym to lift weights.
- The results are in from the Louisville National Senior Games and I will soon drop out of the top 10 list.
- It’s going to take a throw of 145’ 8.5" to get back in the top 10.
- It poured down rain all afternoon today.
- I think my cold is developing into a sinus infection.
This is not looking good.
